Note that it is important that globes match closely the voltage of the batteries being used. The rated voltage of a globe is printed on the side of the bulb. A 6 V globe will glow when connected to 3 V; however when the same globe is connected to 9 V it will glow very brightly and may not last long before the filament overheats and burns out.

Note that when batteries are combined together in a battery holder the individual voltages must be added together ie two 1.5 V batteries yield 3 V.
